Forget fast fashion! Clothing shouldn't be disposable. Cheaply made garments leave a lasting impact in the landfills. We're shaping the future of the planet in the choices we make.

Laundering and care of clothing also has a huge impact on the environment. A few ways to lessen that impact:

*Wash at cooler temps
*line dry
*skip ironing
*check the care instructions before you buy

ORGANIC COTTON:
Picture 11
Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. Unlike conventional cotton, organic cotton production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture. Third-party certification organizations verify that organic producers use only methods and materials allowed in organic production.

How it's different than non-organic cotton:
*Uses crop rotation & natural predators
*Less water is needed since richer soil holds water better
*No genetically modified seeds are used
*Fare wages are paid to farmers

HEMP:

Think hemp - specifically hemp clothing. What instantly comes to mind? Stiff, scratchy, burlap-sack type clothes that come in unflattering boxy cuts and unisex styles? Think again. These aren't your mother's'70s tie-dye tees or earth mother hemp tunics. Hemp has morphed over the years into a line of apparel that would satisfy even the most discriminating fashionista. Once a staple in closets a century ago, hemp has reappeared in newer, hipper versions.

BAMBOO:

In addition to its ability to wick moisture away from the skin, organic bamboo fabric can kill odor-causing bacteria. Most companies who sell clothes and linens made from bamboo fabric have found that this quality lasts for up to 50 washings.

People who have sensitive skin or who are allergic to fabrics made from wool or hemp find that they can wear organic bamboo fabric without any problems. Bamboo fabric is often compared to cashmere because is it so soft and smooth. Clothing made from organic bamboo fabric tends to be warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. This makes it a versatile option that is easy on the pocketbook as well as the environment.
